Ever since news of their shock split broke, Taylor’s fans have been looking for clues in her songs and performances that she had broken up with Joe.
The American pop star has become known for dropping cryptic messages known as ‘easter eggs’ into her tracks.
Taylor loves leaving a trail of breadcrumbs in her music, in 2019, she said of her fans: ‘I’ve trained them to be that way, I love that they like the cryptic hint-dropping. Because as long as they like it, I’ll keep doing it.
‘It’s fun. It feels mischievous and playful.’
Switching up her set list
Fans believe that one of the first signs Taylor and Joe had gone their separate ways was when she switched out one song for another during a recent gig.
After news of the pair’s split broke on April 9, fans took to Twitter to point out that Swift played performed song ‘The 1’ for the first time ever on March 31.
Fans speculated that her performance of the song – in which a narrator laments about breaking up with a possible soulmate – was Swift’s way of hinting she had split from Alwyn. The song replaced ‘Invisible String’ on the setlist – a song about soulmates being drawn together by fate.
When her album ‘Folklore’ was released in 2020, many speculated that ‘Invisible String’ was packed with clues suggesting it was about her and Alwyn’s relationship.
When it was swapped out for ‘The 1’ in March – noting before the performance, ‘You know, I’ve never played that song live before’ – fans didn’t bat an eye.
But they later took Twitter to speculate that the performance was proof that rumors were real once the news of the split had been reveald.
