Liverpool pleased with draw at Stamford Bridge

Liverpool face a pivotal 18 months in a number of positions, but the midfield situation is perhaps not garnering as much attention as the scenario in attack.

When Gini Wijnaldum left for Paris Saint-Germain over the summer, Jurgen Klopp opted to promote from within rather than signing a direct replacement, with Curtis Jones, Tyler Morton and Harvey Elliott all picking up minutes in the centre.

More exits could follow, though: James Milner is out of contract in the summer, while Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain are yet to extend deals currently set to expire in 2023.

Leighton Clarkson had been seen as a player capable of making the step up, but his loan move to Blackburn Rovers didn’t go as well as Elliott’s last season, and Liverpool could yet end up investing in new recruits either in January or over the summer.

With that in mind, Mirror Football has taken a closer look at five men on the radar of the Anfield club.

Monaco’s Tchouameni has been linked with a Premier League move

Aurelien Tchouameni

Monaco midfielder Tchouameni has stepped up in a big way over the last couple of seasons, making his France debut in September and staking a claim for a place in Didier Deschamps’ World Cup squad.

According to The Athletic, Liverpool and Manchester United are among the clubs looking at the 21-year-old, who joined Monaco from Bordeaux in January 2020.

He played five of Monaco’s six games as they went unbeaten through the Europa League group stage, and will be a big part of new manager Philippe Clement’s plans if he stays in the principality.

Franck Kessie

The Athletic also mentions Kessie as a potential target for the Reds, with the AC Milan midfielder yet to commit his future to the Serie A club.

Ivorian international Kessie is currently away with his country at the Africa Cup of Nations, but Milan may look to sell in January in order to avoid losing him for nothing when his contract expires in June.

The 25-year-old has scored 20 Serie A goals since joining from Atalanta in 2019, and has also been linked with both Manchester clubs and Tottenham Hotspur.

Aguibou Camara

Camara has impressed in his first Olympiacos season

Camara only joined Olympiacos from Lille over the summer, but has already impressed enough to catch the eye of bigger clubs.

The former Lille man scored in his only appearance for the French club, and has earned minutes for in the Greek top flight and Europa League this term.

The 20-year-old is also part of Guinea’s squad for the Africa Cup of Nations, where Liverpool will have a chance to see how he performs alongside their own number eight Keita in a competitive setting.

Denis Zakaria

Switzerland midfielder Zakaria has been linked with Premier League sides for a number of years, but has stayed at Borussia Monchengladbach since arriving from Young Boys in 2017.

The 25-year-old is out of contract in the summer and has informed the club of his plans to leave, with Liverpool reportedly among a number of clubs exploring the possibility of a cut-price January move for a man who helped the Swiss national team reach the last eight at Euro 2020.

However, things are unlikely to be straightforward, with former Gladbach boss Marco Rose thought to be keen to bring him to Borussia Dortmund and other English and German clubs keeping tabs on the defensive midfielder.

Florian Neuhaus

Staying in Germany, Zakaria’s teammate Neuhaus is another player who has appeared on Liverpool’s radar in recent years.

The German international has been in and out of Adi Hutter’s side this season, but still managed to make his hundredth Bundesliga appearance before his 25th birthday.

Bayern Munich have also been linked with the midfielder, who has 16 career top-flight goals to his name, but Liverpool may be encouraged by the player’s assertion over the summer that he “could very well imagine going abroad”.
