Arsenal’s Mikel Arteta warned Aaron Ramsdale he may not be first-choice before he even put pen to paper as Mike Dean’s reaction to the goalkeeper’s celebration was spotted
Aaron Ramsdale’s incredible success in an Arsenal shirt this season has seen him overcome a warning Gunners boss Mikel Arteta fired his way in their first telephone call.
The English shot-stopper signed for the Emirates outfit last summer as he arrived from relegated Sheffield United for £30million. Eyebrows were raised at the time of the deal, with many expecting Ramsdale to play second-fiddle to Bernd Leno this season.
But Ramsdale has forced his way into the Arsenal starting XI, and in doing so has proven Arteta’s warning wrong. It comes as Mike Dean was spotted reacting to the Arsenal keeper’s goal celebrations against West Ham.
And the Gunners are reportedly making ‘very serious efforts’ to land £84m-rated Moussa Diaby from Bayer Leverkusen.

Arsenal are making ‘very serious efforts’ to sign Bayer Leverkusen winger Moussa Diaby, it has been reported.
The Frenchman has bagged an impressive haul of 12 goals and 11 assists in 30 Bundesliga appearances this season, leading to him being linked with a host of clubs from across Europe. And reports coming out of Germany suggest the Gunners are keen to beat their rivals to his signature.
But the Gunners will have strong competition to land Diaby, with other Premier League sides also thought to be interested in him – and Leverkusen are demanding a mammoth £84million fee to part ways with the forward.
Mike Dean’s reaction spotted
Previously unseen footage of Arsenal’s 2-1 win over West Ham last weekend has revealed Mike Dean’s reaction at seeing Aaron Ramsdale celebrating.
Goals from Rob Holding and Gabriel delivered a 2-1 victory over West Ham at the London Stadium on Sunday, with both efforts sparking wild scenes of jubilation from the Gunners players. While his teammates were all huddled together celebrating at the far end of the pitch, Ramsdale was seen gesturing inside his penalty area.
And cameras picked up on Mike Dean smiling at the sight of Ramsdale’s antics.
Arteta’s Ramsdale warning
Mikel Arteta warned Aaron Ramsdale it could take him a year to become Arsenal’s first-choice goalkeeper ahead of signing for the club.
But after the Gunners’ early-season struggles, Ramsdale was given his chance ahead of Bernd Leno and hhasn’t looked back, recording season, keeping 12 clean sheets in 30 league appearances. The Englishman has now admitted, though, that Arteta sent him a strong warning before he’d even signed his contract with the club that things might be difficult once he arrived in north London.
And while Ramsdale admits he arrived at the club expecting to be behind Leno in the pecking order, Arteta also challenged him to “try and shake the changing room up” and prove himself.
