Jamie Carragher is in agreement with Peter Schmeichel that Liverpool must secure a top four spot to avoid suffering from the same “problem” which has hampered Manchester United in recent years.
Liverpool were dumped out of the Champions League on Wednesday, meaning their only route to qualifying for the competition again is through their domestic form.
Despite it being a season to forget for Jurgen Klopp’s side, they have shown improved form of late and have a favourable run of fixtures to come.
And Carragher has already identified the key areas they need to strengthen in the summer, providing they achieve their top four goal.
“It’s imperative that Liverpool get into the Champions League next season, in terms of revenue and attracting players,” Carragher said on CBS Sport. “Right now, Liverpool need three players right down the spine.
“They need a centre-back to play. A midfield player to replace Wijnaldum, who is moving. And someone to play, week in and week out as part of the front three if they want to match Manchester City next season.”
Klopp is still yet to make a decision on whether to keep loanee Ozan Kabak at the club, who Liverpool can buy for £18million at the end of the season.
Liverpool are also believed to be working on a deal for RB Leipzig defender Ibrahima Konate, but further additions could prove difficult in the current financial climate.
That would be even more of a task if Liverpool do not secure the lucrative benefits which Champions League football can offer, and United legend Schmeichel explained the difficulties that would bring in luring talent to the club.
Speaking to Carragher, Schmeichel said: “I think that’s a really, really good point you are making there, in terms of attracting players if you need to make adjustments, we have seen that with Manchester United.
“It’s been a problem. The inconsistency of not qualifying for the Champions League. The players, the top players who they really, really want. They are not choosing clubs that might be in the CL the year after. They want to be in the CL now.
“That’s why it’s very important that Liverpool climb up the table and finish in the top four.”
