Christian Eriksen expected to make Man Utd decision as striker target emerges

Manchester United are expected to bring in several new players this summer following the departures of Paul Pogba, Juan Mata, Edinson Cavani, Jesse Lingard and Lee Grant

Erik ten Hag wants to make Manchester United competitive again

Erik ten Hag wants to be the man to end Manchester United’s long wait for silverware next season, yet he’ll need to make some signings to achieve that.

The Red Devils haven’t won a trophy since their Europa League success in 2016-17 and finished just sixth in the Premier League last season, recording their lowest points total since 1989-90. They’ve also said goodbye to several players this summer, including Paul Pogba, Jesse Lingard, Juan Mata, Lee Grant and Edinson Cavani.

It’s obvious Man Utd need fresh talent if they’re to be successful again – but who is Ten Hag interested in signing? Here, Mirror Football rounds-up the latest transfer rumours from Old Trafford – including a surprise new striker target.

Man Utd target Christian Eriksen will make a decision on his Brentford future in the coming days, according to transfer guru Fabrizio Romano.

The Denmark international, 30, is out of contract this summer and several clubs are interested in signing him – including Tottenham, Newcastle and the Red Devils. Brentford have reportedly offered him a new deal, which Eriksen is currently mulling over.

Eriksen is one of the finest playmakers in Europe, helping Inter Milan win Serie A in 2020-21. He suffered a cardiac arrest at Euro 2020 last summer and made his comeback with Brentford, going on to inspire the west London outfit to Premier League safety.

As exclusively revealed by Mirror Football earlier this month, new United boss Ten Hag is looking to bring in midfield reinforcements this summer. He wants to stretch his budget as far as possible and knows former Ajax star Eriksen would be quite the coup.

Who should Manchester United sign this summer? Let us know in the comments below!

Nemanja Matic will complete his Roma medical on Monday, according to Sky in Italy.

The Serbian midfielder, 33, has been given a free transfer by Man Utd and is set for a reunion with Jose Mourinho in the Italian capital. Matic played under the Portuguese coach at Chelsea, helping them win the Premier League title and EFL Cup in 2014-15.

Mourinho brought Matic to Old Trafford in the summer of 2017 during his time as Man Utd boss. The 48-cap international has played 189 games for the club in five seasons, yet his importance to the team has dwindled in recent years.

The Red Devils are happy for Matic to move on and he is expected to sign a one-year deal with Roma, with the option of a further year. Mourinho lifted silverware during his first season at Roma, winning the inaugural Europa Conference League last month.

Ings to Old Trafford?

Danny Ings has emerged as a surprise transfer target for Man Utd.

As reported by 90min, Aston Villa will listen to offers for the Englishman, 29. He joined the West Midlands club from Southampton for £25m last summer but scored just seven goals during his debut season under Dean Smith and successor Steven Gerrard.

Ings was prolific for the Saints in 2019-20, finding the back of the net 25 times. He’s scored 115 goals during his club career – winning the Premier League Goal of the Month award in August 2021 – and has won three senior caps at international level.

Southampton, Bournemouth and Brighton are all believed to be interested in Ings… but United and Arsenal may also be keen on snapping him up. That’s according to The Express, although it seems unlikely Ten Hag will make a move for the former Liverpool ace.

United already have several forwards on their books – including Cristiano Ronaldo, Marcus Rashford, Antony Elanga and Jadon Sancho. Ten Hag will also be keen to give teenager Alejandro Garnacho a chance after he inspired United to FA Youth Cup glory last term.
