Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has been urged to sign German teenager Florian Wirtz in the near future.

The winger, 18, has scored five goals in 14 Bundesliga appearances for Bayer Leverkusen this season and was named the competition’s Player of the Month in September.

He also has four senior caps for Germany – despite his age – and was part of the team that won the U21 Euros last June.

Liverpool have previously been linked with Wirtz, although rivals Manchester United are believed to be in pole position for his signature.

Nevertheless, Eintracht Frankfurt legend and pundit Charly Korbel has backed Klopp to lure his youthful compatriot to Anfield.

“A player like Wirtz needs an environment in which he feels comfortable in order to develop,” Korbel told German outlet SportBild via Sport Witness.

“If he leaves in 2023 or 2024, he can choose the club: Barcelona, Madrid, Bayern, Liverpool. I think he would do well with Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool, as the successor to Sadio Mane.”

Mane isn’t expected to leave Liverpool anytime soon, but the Reds will eventually need to replace the 29-year-old and his team-mate Mohamed Salah, 29.

The Reds are currently without both players as they aim to win the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations tournament in Cameroon.

Wirtz has been tipped to achieve plenty of success in his blossoming career and his international manager Hansi Flick is a big fan.

“Florian is just a huge asset for this team through his carefreeness,” Flick has previously said.

“He’s simply an outstanding technician, loves to play, very creative, has a good shot, runs hard and is quick. He’s got a good total package.”

Liverpool’s hopes of landing the teenager in January are virtually non-existent, as his father and agent Hans-Joachim Wirtz wants him to stay at Leverkusen for the time being.

“Florian definitely wants to play a good role in Leverkusen for the next two years,” insisted Wirtz’s dad.

“What comes after that, we do not know yet. But his focus right now is only on Bayer and the national team.”

Paul Robinson, meanwhile, believes Liverpool should sign Villarreal forward Arnaut Danjuma after a string of impressive performances in Spain.

The five-cap Netherlands international has scored five goals in 11 La Liga appearances this season.

He struggled in his previous spell in the Premier League whilst at Bournemouth – failing to score in 14 top-flight outings as the Cherries suffered relegation – but did well in the Championship last term.

Danjuma found the back of the net 17 times in all competitions during 2020/21 and was named Bournemouth’s Player of the Year, as well as the Championship’s Player of the Month for April.

“He’s been brilliant under Unai Emery in a team that has done really well in recent years,” Robinson told Football Insider earlier this month.

“There is a lot of games for a club like Liverpool though so he would have a role to play. He would not be one of the first names on the team sheet but he is certainly a player who would add value to their squad.

“I could see him fitting into Klopp’s style of play. I think he’d do well.”
