West Ham boost as Scamacca steps up return from injury ahead of Chelsea derby

est Ham received a fitness boost ahead of Saturday’s London derby against Chelsea after forward Gianluca Scamacca was pictured training.

The £30.5million summer signing has not featured since a brief cameo in the defeat to Wolves in mid-January, missing the Hammers’ last two Premier League games, as well as the FA Cup victory over Derby, because of a knee problem.

It remains to be seen whether the Italian is ready to face Chelsea but his availability would provide David Moyes with another forward option after January arrival Danny Ings returned ahead of schedule in Saturday’s draw at Newcastle.

Ings, signed from Aston Villa in a £12m deal last month, picked up a knee injury after making his debut as a substitute in the win over Everton but after initial fears he could miss several League matches, the 30-year-old returned off the bench at St. James’ Park.

West Ham will be looking to build on a recent – and much-needed – upturn in form that has lifted Moyes’ men out of the relegation zone and into the fifth round of the FA Cup when Graham Potter’s out-of-form Blues travel to the London Stadium.

“It’s a great point for us,” Moyes said on the weekend.

“We played well. I’m really pleased for the players. We deserve some credit because we’ve not been playing so well. I thought we played very well.

“There was a period where we had two or three opportunities or moments where we could have got the second goal, but I was pleased with how we controlled the game at different times.”
