Student wraps neighbour’s entire bedroom in twenty rolls of TIN FOIL

A DIY-handy student got revenge on his neighbour for swapping his comfortable mattress for an old one by decorating her entire room with 360metres of TIN FOIL – even wrapping up her sex toy.

Nat Openshaw, from Tring, Hertfordshire, jumped at the chance to teach his uni pal Katy Hughes a lesson that she shouldn’t leave her bedroom door unlocked when she travelled home from Nottingham to visit family in Sandbach, Cheshire, last month.

The scheming 21-year-old, who lives in the flat above, spent £20 and more than five hours decorating everything from her toilet to every wall in 20 18metre-long rolls of tin foil.

Nat even covered her sex toy before leaving it on her foil-draped bed, recording the whole process to share his antics on social media.

When Katy, 21, returned to her digs five days later, she was left squealing ‘it feels like I’m in a bad dream’ as her flat mates filmed her stunned reaction to the room’s silvery makeover.

Nat turned the clips into two TikToks which have since racked up more than 146,000 views and 15,000 likes, and he’s hailed his impressive efforts ‘completely worthwhile’.

He justified targeting his fellow Nottingham Trent University student because she’s like ‘a magpie who loves shiny things’, and as revenge after she switched his soft foam mattress for another resident’s old spring one, which he didn’t notice until he went to bed.

However, despite seeing the funny side, embarrassed Katy has claimed she’s waiting for her pals to plot her revenge for last month’s [APRIL 5] antics.

‘They never really lock their individual flat doors, so I knew her room would be unlocked for about a week or so and wondered what I could do,’ explained Nat. 

‘I realised that it’s quite a hard, flat room. There’s no soft furnishings, so I thought I’d cover it in tinfoil. I Googled it and there was a how-to, and I’m quite handy with DIY so I thought I could easily do this.

‘I went down to Poundland and bought 20 rolls and a whole roll of tape. From start to finish it took me from 11am to 6pm with an hour and a half break for lunch.

‘I started at the bottom end of the room, then realised it was going to take ages, so I started on the big things so if I didn’t finish it, it would still look good.

‘The walls were quite easy to do because they were flat and straight, but the hardest bit was doing the bed and I had to get some help on that.

‘Katy wasn’t very happy [about the dildo’s involvement], But I thought, “why not?”, because it’d make the video funnier and I wasn’t going to spare her the embarrassment of leaving it out.

‘Because she was getting driven home by her dad and I’d left it on the bed, I was worried if her dad would walk into the room first.

‘I was having cold feet for the rest of the week, but luckily he stayed with the car. Seeing her reaction made it completely worthwhile. She was more in a state of shock than anything.

‘There was definitely some frustration in there. She just couldn’t believe it and didn’t know what to say. She knew it was me straight away because this is the kind of thing I’d do.

‘We banter Katy a lot because she’s quite ditzy, and I thought this vision we have of her is away with the clouds and like a magpie that’d like shiny things.

‘There’s a lesson to be learned. You’re 21-year-old, doing a masters degree. You have a key, use it.

‘[Katy] pranked me at the beginning of the year when we all had different mattresses. It was like a lottery. Some had a better one and some had a worse one.

‘She decided to swap out my mattresses with one of the worse ones from someone else’s room, and she did it really well so I couldn’t tell until I went to bed that night.

‘I had a foamy one but this one was a springy one so for me it was a nightmare because I was used to my old one.’

Nat, who’s been studying business management and economics, submitted his dissertation early last month so adds the prank was a good way to kill spare time.

The prankster enjoys DIY projects, having built a brick pizza oven for his parents in the summer, so he said this prank ‘had his stamp all over it’ even though he wasn’t in the room to see Katy’s reaction.

Katy, who is studying a masters degree in digital marketing, said: ‘I was so shocked. I even looked in, then shut the door and walked back out again to check if this had definitely happened.

‘I just didn’t think anyone would go in there, but obviously I was wrong. I’ve definitely learned my lesson to lock my door.

‘I didn’t really have time to pull everything down that night, so it was about two days before I got the courage to take it down. It took about an hour.

‘I’ve still got little bits up on my walls now and I can’t get them down. It was a good job, but I didn’t want it in my room.

‘I don’t know why he did it to me. If anyone thinks of how I can get revenge I’ll go with it, but I wouldn’t want to put as much effort in as he did. That was a lot.

‘I’d go for something less time consuming and less expensive. £20 on tinfoil? What a waste.’

Nat posted the videos to TikTok five days later and it went viral within hours.

Katy replied saying: ‘Just you wait for karma.’

And it wasn’t long before social media users were quick to take to the comments section, with one writing: ‘I’m not going to uni,’ while a second penned: ‘This is gold.’

A third commented: ‘If someone did this to me, I’d undo the bed and tv and leave the rest. I’m too lazy for that,’ while a fourth wrote: ‘At least it won’t be dusty. So kind.’

Nat added: ‘One of my major motivations for the whole day was that I could get a good video out of this. It’s been great to see all the reactions and I’m glad it’s made people laugh.

‘I’ll be careful in case [Katy] tries to get revenge, but the difference is I lock my bedroom door when I’m not in it.’
